Sustainability & Responsibility

Assuming responsibility - acting sustainably

The increasing global challenges in the environment, society and economy make it more urgent than ever to reconcile ecology, social responsibility and economy. We assume great responsibility as an internationally operating logistics company

Responsibility. In this context, responsible corporate action geared towards sustainable development has always been a maxim of the Geis entrepreneurial family.

We consider this primarily as a continued improvement process and efficiency enhancement - with the aim of continued further development of our services, the reduction of consumption of natural resources and the expansion of trusting cooperation with employees, customers and partners. Sustainable value-orientation regarding customer satisfaction, professionalism, profitability, environmental awareness and integrity are the cornerstone for the development of the Geis Group.

Our strategy

With our new sustainability strategy, which is an integral part of our corporate strategy, we have set ourselves ambitions goals - and put together a comprehensive package of measures. Our sustainability strategy is concentrated on the three dimensions of environment, social and economy and is aligned with the targets set out for sustainable development of United Nations (SDG).

HARMONY BETWEEN ECOLOGY, SOCIAL ISSUES AND THE ECONOMY

The goal is to reconcile responsibility for the environment, social commitment and economic efficiency.

CREATE ADDED CALUE AND REDUCE CO2

The Geis group creates more value for its customers as well as its company - and at the same time reduces its environmental footprint. This idea is at the focus of sustainability strategy and associated ambitious targets.

PROMOTE INNOVATION AND IMPLEMENT THEM DIGITALLY

Innovation and creation of added value with fewer resources are essential factors when it comes to sustainable management. In particular, Geis considers digitisation as an essential element for making the process more efficient and saving resources.

ORIENTATION TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, EU & PARIS AGREEMENT GOALS

In this, the Geis Group is oriented to national and supranational objectives such as the climate-neutrality plans of the federal government and the European Union or the Paris Climate Protection Targets.

ORIENTATION TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Geis also integrates the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations in its sustainability management and focuses on ten from seventeen selected targets which are closely linked to its business.

Environment and climate protection are fundamental goals for us. In the long-term we can be successful only through sustainable actions.

Hans-Georg Geis and Wolfgang Geis, Managing Partners of the Geis Group

Our Mission Zero

Being aware that the long-term economic goals can be achieved only through extremely efficient treatment of the environment, the ecological use of raw materials has been an important component of the Geis Group corporate policy for a long time. Since 2005 we have been operating an integrated environmental system in the company- certified according to Environmental Standard ISO 14001. Starting with 2006 we have also been involved in the Environmental Pact of Bavaria and are also active in the Hesse Environmental Alliance and Lower Franconia Environment Support Group.

For our daily work this means e.g. using low emission vehicles, identifying energy savings potential in all areas and ecologically aligning the entire supply chain.

That is why we have bundled our measures into a sustainability strategy and set ourselves an ambitious goal: The MissionZero, a milestone of our Roadmap for sustainable transformation. This mission is aimed at making the entire corporate group climate-neutral by 2040.

“Clean transport and clean logistics - this is what we want to turn into reality in the Geis Group”, say Hans-Wolfgang Geis and Jochen Geis, Managing Partners. “Our goal is to be a climate-neutral company in the 1 and 2 scope by 2040. We want to save up to 65 percent CO2 by 2030.”

On the roof of our handling terminal in Bad Neustadt the facility will provide a peak output of 1.3 megawatts. We need most of the in-house produced power for our purposes and install electrical charging stations for cars, forklifts and bikes. Our co-workers use the latter increasingly for commuting to work - Geis offers a company bike leasing.

Here we are building our building of the new generation – in wood-hybrid construction with wood roof trusses, a wooden façade for the office buildings and partly green hall façade. The roof will be equipped with a photo-voltaic system and the office buildings will receive a green roof. Moreover, the new building project is characterised by large roof light strips, rain water use for the truck washing system and a mass storage for our own power use, among other things for office heating.

We have also focused on our existing fixtures: Early 2021 we switched all German locations to power supply with green energy. In addition, we have also planned for two further photo-voltaic plants: A large system with 4.5-megawatt peak output is to be put in operation on seven roofs of our location in Nuremberg, a further one will be installed at our terminal in Brno, Czech Republic in the coming spring.

However, especially for trucks there are still a few obstacles to overcome e.g. long delivery times, high acquisition costs, limited range and loading capacity as well as insufficient charging stations. However, in the area of electric trucks we are looking forward to significant boost in development. Currently, LNG trucks provide a bridging technology which are fuelled with liquid biogas and operate almost climate-neutral. We use electric and LNG vehicles for certain customer projects on defined routes.

To ensure that you too directly benefit, we have developed new carbon-neutral products in connection with sustainability strategy. Today they already enable you to handle your logistics solutions in all three business areas climate-neutral. For this, you use either our “Transport green” portfolio for alternatively powered, climate efficient vehicles e.g. LNG or E-Trucks, or you achieve the climate neutrality of your shipments through Co2 compensation. For this we use certified climate projection projects according to highest standards - from protection of forests to use of hydroelectric power.

Our areas of focus

“We have made good progress on our way to climate-neutrality. Of course, we are aware that we are only at the start of a long road, which will require a great deal from us”, say Hans-Wolfgang Geis and Jochen Geis. “We accept this consciously because at the end we would like to create genuine added value for the environment, for our co-workers and for our customers with our commitment to sustainability.” All the details and background information on our sustainability strategy are summarized in our Sustainability Report.
