From Switzerland to Maryland: Our Track Renewal Train Project

Road Services, Air + Sea Services, 03. September 2025

At the beginning of this year, we had the exciting task of safely transporting a complete track renewal train from the Swiss manufacturer Matisa in Crissier, Switzerland, to Odenton, Maryland, in the United States. This project required extensive planning and perfect teamwork due to the various modes of transport involved.

The journey began with special road transports to Basel, followed by inland waterway transport to Antwerp. There, we loaded the entire cargo onto roll-on/roll-off ships bound for Baltimore. Once in the USA, we organized transportation to the customer's site, inclusive unloading by cranes onto the tracks.

There were, of course, challenges. Due to the size of the cargo, route planning was particularly complex and required flexible alternative routes in Switzerland and the USA. In Baltimore, the route changed at the last minute, extending travel times. Finally, a snowstorm during delivery required us to make additional adjustments to the schedule.

Despite these challenges, our team successfully completed the project. Mike Montigel, the general manager of general transport, says,

Projects like this demonstrate our strength as a team. We plan, act, and support each other, and in the end, we see the result of our work on the railway tracks.

This is a perfect example of how the Geis Group implements large logistics projects in a professional and safe manner, on time and with flexibility and spontaneity.
